Though we have enough advanced technologies for treatments and surgeries that can get most eye-related problems resolved, but prevention is better than cure. Why not include these common food items from nature’s basket and save all the money from medical bills! Nature has given us everything in abundance. We have still not fully explored the pros and cons of different foods it offers. While some foods help reduce weight, work wonders for your skin, there are some super foods that can improve your eyesight!
1. Green leafy vegetables
Nutrient-dense greens such as spinach, kale, broccoli, fenugreek etc. play a major role in protecting our eyesight. All green veggies contain two components – Lutein and Zeaxanthin – which help prevent cell damage in your eyes. Leafy greens work best if taken as fresh juice in the morning.
Pulses and grams are a great source of zinc and flavonoids. Zinc helps in transportation of Vitamin A from liver to the eyes, which protects the retina, in turn protecting your eyes from blindness. A study conducted the Royal Victoria Infirmary and College of Medicine, Newcastle-on-Tyne also reveals that a deficiency of Zinc and Vitamin A can also lead to night blindness.
Adding beans and lentils to curries and salads or consuming them in the form of sprouts preserves most of the nutrition that helps a great deal in the long run.
3. Salmon and oily fish
Oily fishes such as Salmon, Sardine and Tuna contain high amounts of Omega-3 fatty acids. A study conducted by the US National Eye Institute found that these protect your eyes from dry-eye syndrome and macular degeneration. Salmon also contains Astaxanthina which helps protect your eyes from a number of diseases.
It is advisable to eat organic fish whenever possible. And those of you who don’t eat fish, include black current seed oil and flex seed oil in your diet.
All peppers are equally important whether red, yellow, green, brown or black for an overall health of your eyes. Peppers are rich in Vitamin A and C. Vitamin A helps preserve your eyesight and Vitamin C protects your eyes from developing a cataract.
A regular intake keeps up the supply of these nutrients in your body and acts as a protective cover for your eyes.
5. Farm eggs
Organic eggs are also rich in Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Vitamin-A and Omega 3. These are present in a highly absorbent form in the eggs, making it easy for the body to take them in and use their good qualities. Eggs also protect the body against age-related macular degeneration. The best way is to consume the yolk of the eggs.
